No offense, but your Bell Witch story is very inaccurate. I would be curious to know where you got your version from. John
Bell died on Dec. 20 not Dec. 21. He never proposed to Kate Batts and to be correct, she outlived both John and Lucy by many years.
Even thought the spirit referred to itself as Kate, it also referred to itself as many other entities such as an early immigrant
from North Carolina and a Native American spirit. Unfortunately the name "Kate" stuck and the false story grew that it was the ghost of Kate Batts even though she was very much alive and living just down the road. The spirit never revealed the truth as to what it was or where it came from.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I do not know of Kate laughing at Johns funeral. The accounts I'm familiar with have her singing.
Kate did not grow bored and decide to leave. She said all along that her mission was two fold. To kill John and keep Betsy
from marrying Joshua Gardner. Once that was accomplished, she left.
Your timeline is wrong on Kate trying to prevent Betsy's marriage. By the time Kate returned at the end of the seven years,
Betsy had already been married to Powell for several years. The spirit had succeeded in preventing her (Betsy) from marrying her true love during the four years of the original haunting.
During the two week period after the return, Kate didn't really terrorize the family. Actually this was the most revealing and
intimate time. The spirit made many prophecies and told of the future and how there would have to be a great spiritual reawakening. It is also important to note that the spirit told the family that it know the death of their father was a burden to them, but it had to be done for reasons it could not reveal. There was even a comparison the trails of Job in the bible.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but please correct the information. I'm not trying to be critical, but just trying to help
in accuracy. If you are going to take the time to have a great web site, like you do, the info should be correct. I live here in Tennessee and it is important to some of us that our folklore remain intact. Thanks for understanding. You do have a cool web site! |
