There has been a huge influx of horror movies
screaming out of Hollywood in the last couple of
years. So much so, that it would take forever to
review them all (you can visit rottentomatoes.com or
imdb.com for that). Here are a few that I either
loved or hated.

More Scary Movies
I've always been an avid horror, Sci-fi, Fantasy, and otherwise spookyish movie watcher, but what I
also enjoy is a good spook from the TV. Here are some more of my scary movie choices, and my new
TV section. Enjoy!
Scary TV
Looking Forward to Seeing:

Bell Witch The Movie, The Fog, Underworld
Evolution, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The
Corpse Bride, The Skeleton Key, King Kong

Loves-
Hates-
The Grudge: Okay, I liked it. The cat and the kid
gave me some serious creepin willies (sorry, that's
my Carnivale lingo talking). It may not be the
"scariest movie of all time," but it's definitely stylish,
and I give it points for actually being set in Japan.
The Others: This one actually did keep me guessing.
I try not to analyze movies too much while I'm
watching them, because that will pretty much ensure
that you won't like most of what you watch. I liked
the setting and atmosphere of this movie, and the
creepiest part? "Are you mad? I am your daughter."
Sleepy Hollow: Well, in the last few years we've
pretty much been shown that Johnny Depp can do
no wrong. He was great as Ichabod Crane, and I
loved the silliness of the character in the spooky
setting. Tim Burton interpreted the old tale very
well.
Good Enough:
Jeepers Creepers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn
of the Dead, Constantine, Van Helsing, 28 Days
Later, From Hell, What Lies Beneath, The Haunting,
House on Haunted Hill, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Saw,
The Village, The Ring, The Amityville Horror
The Sixth Sense: Who isn't totally in love with M.
Night Shyamalan? He's turned into one of my new
favorite directors. "I see dead people," has been
forever inter-woven into the common vernacular, and
everyone can immediately identify to which movie
that quote belongs. A very good DVD to add to
scary movie night.
Darkness Falls: I really tried to like this movie. The
beginning was pretty good, and it seemed like it
could really go somewhere, but it just didn't, and left
me wanting more.
Darkness: I wanted to like this one also because I
have such high hopes for Anna Paquin.
Unfortunately, I hated it! The backstory was pretty
good, and there were definitely some spooky ghost
kids lurking about, but this movie just didn't follow
"the rules" well enough. It took too long for you to
find out what was going on, and even then it didn't
make too much sense. And is it just me or did
people speak too softly? Let me feeling disgusted,
and I didn't even check out the bonus features.
Ring 2: As a fan of the first Ring movie, I was
surprised to have so many gripes coming out of the
theater after seeing Ring 2. I enjoyed getting a
backstory for the movie, but it annoyed me that
they went with the psycho mother's "I have to kill
you to save you" bit. It just didn't sit well with me,
and reminded me too much of Andrea Yates, a very
sick woman who really did kill her 5 children by
drowning them in 2001.
Why did I watch this?:
Lost Souls, Cabin Fever, Wrong Turn, They,
Fear.com, Shaun of the Dead, Cursed, White Noise,
Eight Legged Freaks, Queen of the Damned, Alien
Vs Predator, Freddy Vs Jason (yes I said it!)
So many cool spooky TV shows have come and
gone, and so many more are coming this next Fall
season. Which sound good to me? First, let's see
what's been.
Take A Bow
Buffy the Vampire Slayer- 7 seasons long and
never got the props it deserved. Why did people
like Buffy so much? Because she was a girl who
kicked butt. I mean really, without Buffy to pave
the way, do you think Sidney Bristow on Alias
would have shown up? WB & UPN
Dead Like Me- Hilarious show about grim reapers,
cancelled after two seasons. We really could have
benefited from a longer run of this show.
Showtime
Carnivale- One of the best shows on TV. I'm still
heartbroken that it's not on the air. Think of it as a
mix between Stephen King's The Stand and Freaks.
Also cancelled after two seasons. HBO
Current
Lost- With all of the hype surrounding this show, I
had to watch the pilot, and was instantly hooked.
The images of the crashed plan on the beach,
people screaming and running around were really
harrowing, and I watched very episode of the first
season. The only gripe I had was, where was the
monster? It only showed up in like, what, four
episodes? Still, there was enough chills to get me
through, and the finale stopped me cold. Can't
wait for Fall to see what happened. ABC
Smallville- When I first heard about this show, I
didn't have high hopes. I mean, watching a tv
show about Clark Kent's geek days wasn't very
high on my Need to See list. The pilot episode was
really kind of intense though, and seeing Clark and
Lex Luthor become friends, knowing that they
would eventually be enemies was a guilty pleasure.
WB
Coming Up
Ghost Whisperer- I'm still too mad about Joan of
Arcadia being cancelled to give this show much of
a chance. It sounds to me like a rip off of Medium.
CBS
Medium- I actually missed the first episode of this
show, but word of mouth raved, and I caught a re-
airing of the pilot. What can I say? A great show!
Based on the life of a real life medium, it's funny,
doesn't take itself too seriously, but still makes you
wonder about the big issues. NBC
The Inside- Not really a horror type show, but
spooky anyway. A look into the FBI's creeeepy
case division. FOX
Supernatural- I'm really going to try hard to like
this show, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it'll
be too much like every ghost movie I've ever
watched. WB
The Night Stalker- Looking forward to this one.
Follows a man (Stuart Townsend) looking into the
strange murder of his wife. ABC
TV Movies Worth Mentioning
The Mists of Avalon- Based on a book, takes
another look at the King Arthur legend. Definitely
worth watching. TNT
Stephen King's Salem's Lot- A good adaptation of
the book. I thought it worked very well, and didn't
have so many of the "get real" moments that
plagued Rose Red. TNT
