Dragons have long been depicted in literature.
In nearly every culture of the world, a dragon is deeply embeded in culture. Mant times, dragons are seen as evil creatures who burn medeveil villiages to the ground, and eat the children of the poor defenseless people. In China though, they are a symbol of good luck.
Most are described as a reptile that can fly an
breathe fire. They can be any color, and nearly any size. They may also have horns and long forked tongues.
I think dragons have received a bad rap. To
me, they are fierce protectors, and willing to fight for what they believe in. They are honest and brave, but can be deadly of betrayed.
Some examples of dragons in literature and film
are, "Pete's Dragon," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and "Dragonheart." |

A cool breeze drifted across a grassy plain. It stopped to dance with the faeries of the purple flowers, and
then moved into the wooded trees of the forest. The high trees bowed and welcomed, and the breeze slipped into their quiet branches, and through the canopy to the world below. The leaves shimmered in hazy patches on the ground as the breeze made its way past. It's fingers dipped into a creek bed, and tickled a mermaid, who giggled as her hair swept across her face.
The breeze slipped past the slumbering dragon, and over a gathering of elves, and came at last to the end of
the forest where it stopped. There sitting near a tree, humming softly, was a girl with healthy skin and wild hair. She smiled at the wind's arrival, and nodded to her sleeping companion. 'He is dreaming,' she said quietly. She ran her fingers through it's silvery mane. |

The breeze approached cautiously, as it had not seen one of these in many years. In awe, it moved across
its back and strong legs, up to its shoulders to its neck and lifted gently the hair from its face. The animal awakened then, and nudged the young woman, thanking her for her kindness. Then, throwing its front legs into the air, and sending its horn skyward, the unicorn lept away.
The breeze followed for a time, but the magical creature was far too fast, and couldn't be caught. The
Summer wind finally stopped, and watched the Unicorn slide further away until it disappeared into the setting sun. The breeze sank into the grass as dusk approached, and laid its head on a rock, kepping an eye on the sky. It sighed, and when the first star appeared it made a very special wish. To see the unicorn again. Because twice in one lifetime is not nearly enough. |
|
Unicorns were heavily sought after in the
Middle Ages, and were considered like Mermaids and Faeries; To be living, breathing creatures. The first form of the unicorn took the body of a goat, and was far too small to carry a human being. By the 19th century, Unicorns had grown into large horse like animals with a long pointed horn. The Unicorn is a timeless symbol of virtue, purity and selflessness. Its one weakness, as the legend goes, is that if it finds a maiden pure of heart (and it knows her when he sees her) sitting, it will come and lay its head in her lap. She an the unicorn are like one spirit.
Unicorns have been depicted in literature for
hundreds of years, and more recently in movies (Ex. Legend, The Last Unicorn, Harry Potter). They continue to be beautiful to us, even as we grow older and wiser, and they still bring out that child-like innocence. We are willing to believe in them, even if we can't see them. |
