Few, if any, kids have not heard of the
name, Harry Potter. It is the name of a very special boy who after 11 years of feeling like a second class person, suddenly discovers that he is very special indeed.
His muggle (the name of non-wizard)
guardians who've kept him ever since his parents died, try to keep him away from magic because they think that it's bad. Hagrid, the grounds keeper of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, comes to his rescue, and whisks him off to the school where his dead parents once attended. Once there, Harry makes a few friends (Ron, Hermione and Hagrid of course) and also a few enemies (mostly Draco Malfoy, but also Professor Snape).
It's hard for Harry to adapt to the sudden
change, especialy since everybody knows who is is. He is very famous. When he was still a baby, an evil wizard killed his parents, and tried to kill him too, but old magic used by his mother protected Harry, and sent the deadly curse right back to the evil wizard. It weakened him horribly, and almost killed him, but he managed to slink away to hide. His name was Voldemort, the leade of a powerful sect of dark wizards. Harry was the only person ever to escape a curse from Voldemort, and ended up with only a lightening shaped scar on his forehead.
After 11 years of plotting, Voldemort
finally came after Harry again while he was at school at Hogwarts, but was defeated again by the boy-wizard. |

Harry Potter has taken this world by
storm, and it has been suggested that he has prompted my kids to read than any other character in history. What is it about Harry that we love so much?
We love Harry because he is everything
that we want to be. He is afraid, but shows remarkable courage in the face of danger. He is small, untidy, and wears glasses, but he shines like a diamond when challenged. Harry can fly. He never gives up, and sets his sights higher than the sky. Harry is that part in all of us that we rarely release, for fear, that once out, it can never be restrained. But who wants to be restrained? Who says that we should have a finite number of dreams, and only a few ways to attain them. We should all be so lucky to be able to soar in the sky when we feel down.
A piece of Harry Potter resides in all of us,
and every now and then, we get a glimpse of what is just under the surface of ourselves, and what we could become. |

The day Jo found out that her book was to
be published was the happiest of her life. The Harry Potter series will encompass 7 books, one for each year Harry attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The outlines of each have already been developed, and are hidden in a safe place.
Now J.K. Rowling is able to write full time, which
is what she always wanted to do. She works everyday on her stories. Sometimes for 3 hours, and sometimes for 11. It depends on how quickly the story will establish itself. The advice she gives to all aspiring writers is to read as often as you can. Thanks to J.K. and Harry Potter, we'll have plenty to read. |
